I put this page in my main menu, because I’m deeply wading into learning new tech for making websites. I’ve been coming to this page so often, to record notes for myself, that I decided to make it easier for myself to find the page quickly, by putting it on a menu.

You may have noticed my websites are in a state of flux. I’m using WordPress for creating this website, and I’m currently using the Genesis Framework and Dynamik Website Builder child-theme. I have a LOT to learn. At the moment, it has hardly anything special. It’s boring. It’s borking.

May 15, 2014. Found CarrieDils genesis office hours. And a link to Susan at Graphicallydesigning.com, who does paid-support for theme modification. I will keep her in mind for future consultations.

Starting April 19, 2014, my older notes:
In the past, I tried StrapPress. I couldn’t put a slider in the header. sheesh.
There is a modest selection of Page Templates, but the ones I like, have weird footer and sidebar hard-coding. Problems: If I set Frontpage to be static, it shows latest blog posts. If I set it to be latest blog posts, it shows static. In other words, it’s backwards from everything else so I have to reset it, anytime I switch themes. I gave up on StrapPress.

Agent, had troubles with this theme that I couldn’t solve.

Avada. My youtube videos in my blog posts, don’t shrink for narrow windows or mobile devices. Avada was supposed to have good video handling (that I apparently haven’t figured out yet) and LOTS of sliders, including the multi LayerSlider that does parallax. It gave me INFINITE SCROLL. so I like that. (Genesis & Dynamik don’t support Infinite scroll). HOLY CRAP. I think this one, when I installed it, turned off Plugins like Askimet, Jetpack, Custom Meta, SEO Ultimate, WangGuard, WP-Table Reloaded. That was rude.

After lots of struggles I gave up on Avada. Avada still won’t resize its youtubes. Limited colors. The LayerSlider was causing crashes so I had to disable it. I never saw any parallax. Then, I read that Avada is “bloated”.

Enfold. I thought I might try it. It has lots of nice column short codes. But I’m hoping I can learn to do column shortcodes in Genesis+Dynamik.

Karma. Supposedly 12 languages. several sliders. 30 colors. Elegant overlay transparent patterns. Pictures have a frame and shadow below, which is nice.
Problems: Youtube videos don’t resize properly. They are silent. That’s a dealbreaker.
I installed Karma… never saw 30 color options. Videos DID resize nicely. pictures didn’t have frames. On home page, the “latest posts” always showed a left sidebar, which I couldn’t get rid of. The Fusion-Core shortcodes wouldn’t work and generated errors.
Several plugins were inactive (LayerSlider, MailChimp, List Subscribe Form and Post type Order.

Salient: Video backgrounds, video loops in the Nectar Slider. and parallax in all things. The Nectar Slider shows WebM video format, Ogg format, and MP4.
Showing videos in a header slider, seems like a nice thing. My moose website uses a lot of short videos.

Simplicity. Very colorful. good for flat cartoons. Never tried it.

April 26, 2014 further notes.
Allow HTML in Category Descriptions is to facilitate using the Categories as Silos.
Removes the word Category from URLs.

Video Silo Plugin I shall investigate this further, later.

 

May 9, 2014 update.  I installed Genesis theme,  Dynamik Website Builder, then needed an extra plugin so youtube videos would shrink properly. It is ‘Video Overlayer’.
